Alex's Trip to LEGO KidsFest

Lego KidsFest, Cincinnati, OH, March 24, 2012

Mom: What did you do at the Lego party?
Alex: Build lots of things.

Mom: What kinds of places were there to build things?
Alex: First, there was a big pile of bricks on the floor. There were
probably 200 legos! I built a Droid battleship. A lot of people were
sitting in this giant puddle of legos. PILE, not puddle. What if it
was a puddle? Who would make a Lego puddle? It would be hard to make a
lego puddle. Who would have thought of that? I don't know.

I built things out of only green blocks that were very thick and there
was only one kind of them. There were only thick four pieces, so there
were two dots on one side and four on the other. Eight dots. That was
the only kind of block they had in that area. I don't remember what I
made. Dad made a Lego toilet.

We saw lots of Lego sculptures. There were a lot of Star Wars
sculptures. They were made of all Legos and they were like two feet
tall or something.
Mom: Were they bigger or smaller than you are?
Alex: Bigger.
Mom: Were they bigger or smaller than Mom?
Alex: Probably about the same height.
Mom: They were all just about life-size sculptures.
Alex: And they were all made of Legos. There was a Batman standing up
on a tower and he had a cape. The cape was not Legos. There was a
battle droid, Boba Fett., a triceratops that moved, and there was an
Indiana Jones sculpture. There was a big triceratops and a little
triceratops.

There were lots of cages with Lego scenes. They used clear sticks to
make some people look like they were flying. There were little frog
legos. They like very small ramped legos in the back, so they looked
like little ramps, but they were actually green frogs. They were in
one of the scences. One scene was kind of silly. C-3PO was carrying a
lightsabre. There was a Star Wars scene of things. And there was some
pirate ships in another box. There was a knocked down building and a
lot of robots. One of the things in the scenes was an AT-AT Walker.
Dad took a picture of the AT-AT walker. It had a bunch of
stormtroopers running from it.

And there were things that we got to touch that were alive. And they
were animals. One was a lizard and one was a snake. [The zoo and
aquarium both had booths at the event. The Aquarium brought an albino
milk snake, and the Zoo had a North African lizard called Uromastyx.]

[There was a booth where kids could build a flower, as a fundraiser
for Cincinnati Children's Hospital or some such.] I got a green
platform to start. I built a house to go with all the flowers that
could be growing with the house.

I built a theatre for the giant map. There was a fan and a little
spinner thing in the middle that they would use during things. Just
during little meetings or something to plan out what they would do.

We played a game and got a free kit. It was a Boba Fett ship kit. The
name of the ship is Slave I. We had to build things in the game. We
had to build things in two minutes for the game. We built rockets.

Mom: Did you have a good time?
Alex: Yes. Yes I did. My favorite thing was probably the Darth Vader sculpture.

Masterful Manipulations: Short Story Homeschool Co-op Class

I taught a class on iconic short stories this spring at our homeschool co-op. I don't know how many of my former English teachers may have passed since, but any that have are rolling in their graves at this news. I find teaching especially stressful but this class exceeded my expectations in basically every way and that might have made it worthwhile. We read 20 short stories, which I was free to choose primarily on the basis of how much I liked them. I organized them based on loose associations. Table of Contents (We never officially read this, but it was so short, I included it in case I needed to read it aloud during that first class.) One Summer Night , by Ambrose Bierce Short Story Elements To Build a Fire , by Jack London Irony The Necklace , by Guy de Maupassant The Gift of the Magi , by O. Henry The Ransom of Red Chief , by O. Henry Irony - American The Veldt , by Ray Bradbury The Lottery , by Shirley Jackson Setting - Irony - Foreign The Sniper , by Liam O'Flah...

Lazy Saturday

I took a three-hour nap this afternoon (no fooling) to make up for my restless sleep last night. It put a big hole in the day, but I'm feeling much better now and I'll be better prepared to lose another hour of sleep tonight. Tomorrow will be the first ever observation of Eastern Daylight Savings Time in Indiana. They've been warning residents of the imminent clock-setting for roughly three weeks on the radio -- and I only listen to the radio while I'm driving around town. Although we'll miss the convenience of Central Time's TV schedule, we're glad we won't have to play "What time is it in Indiana?" with our families for another summer. Come to think of it, we don't have cable anymore, anyway, so the TV schedule will hardly affect us. It seemed the local broadcast channels were on "Indiana time" last year. The day didn't go quite as planned. We had been invited to our yoga instructor's home for an afternoon of "jammi...

Another month passes me by

To quickly recap: We enjoyed a late-October weekend in St. Louis, accidentally arriving during the 8th inning of the Cardinals' World Series Winning Game. At the Ballpark Hilton. One block from the stadium. It was a night -- and very early morning -- to remember. We visited the zoo, Union Station, the Arch, the Botanical Gardens (to see the Chihuly exhibit), and I don't remember where else. Great city, good times. The furnace installation was completed on November 4th, and we've been toasty warm ever since. On November 15th, I hosted (with the immense help of three friends) 20 at the Ladies' Gourmet dinner. "Cranberries" were the theme ingredient. Everything was delicious. I was exhausted. The afternoon before leaving for St. Louis, I taped three half-hour shows for the Health Department, which I then had to scramble to assemble and deliver by November 17th. Of course, nothing ever goes smoothly over at the studio, so it took three times as long as planned ...
